Humanity Built by Empathy

My Better World

I believe that the biggest problems involved in global justice today stem from a common denominator, a lack of empathy. The average person living in the U.S. cannot begin to imagine the everyday struggles that someone may be dealing with in Africa. This is also true even for those living within the U.S. A wealthy man living in San Francisco does not feel the same hardships of a man who just lost his family in Hurricane Katrina. As the world has grown, expanded, and become more diverse we have grown disconnected from each other. I believe this disconnect is what keeps people from wanting to reach out help others in need. My first step in making the world a better place would be to work to shorten this gap and establish a sense of global unity.

The project I propose involves the establishment of a private boarding school that would be fully funded by donations. The schools would begin in elementary school and extend throughout high school with children returning home for breaks.
The schools would allow for students from a variety of different countries to all learn in one place. I believe that the diversity in cultures would not only heighten the children’s academic environment but also allow for a greater development of empathy. The children will all be coming from different geographies, different cultures, different religions, and each one will have their own story to share.

I got the idea for this project while volunteering at the Blind Children’s Center here in LA. Although the school was established to cater to the visually impaired, many families opt to send their children to the school who are not visually impaired in order for them to develop a better sense of understanding and compassion. I believe that this project could later expand to also include children with disabilities once enough resources were acquired. Although it would be a small step that may not be directly saving lives at the start, I believe this project has the potential to bring a change in mindset, how we think about each other and how we react to the struggles of others.

    1. I also think global unity is very important because that can make us learn more diffident culture and languages. When some natural disaster happen, all countries can help each one. All people in our world will be full of happiness. The next step you can have a organization to help people experience the earthquake or other natural disaster in the world.

  2. I think the fact that there is this hug gap within one country, and another gap among different countries, causes misunderstandings and troubles when people are actually trying to do good things. It is a great idea to foster understanding and create a shared learning experience among young people.

  3. I like your idea of establishing a private boarding school with diverse culture. This will make our world a better place to live, as people from diverse culture contribute to new ways of thinking and new knowledge.

  4. That boarding school idea is really cool - I definitely agree that empathy is a common problem with people. It can be so hard to really understand what other people are thinking and experiencing.

  5. I agree there seems to be a growing disconnect in the world which I find perplexing because technology was supposed to bring us together. There seems to be a lack of empathy for others unless a tragedy occurs. It shouldn't take the death of someone or losing a job, to reach out to them. I like the school idea. By starting at a young age, we can guide kids to being compassionate and caring adults. The difficulty will be in hiring the right personnel to carry out the project.

  6. I wrote something similar. I agree that the world does lack empathy and what we need is for everyone to feel compassion and care more about others rather than only thinking about themselves

  7. I agree with you on that lack of empathy is the main root cause of the issue. And it's a cool idea to bring kids from different background together, but I feel it's hard to do it in practice because it seems parents want their children to go to best school and out of lack of empathy, they might not want to send their children to a school like that just hoping to develop the empathy in their children.

  8. I completely agree that diversity could help people to think differently and perceive things differently. It's really hard to step into other people's shoes to understand how they feel. But we could do better by increasing interaction with people from different background.

  9. This is a great idea and a great start. I really like how the boarding school will be consisted of students from different countries to allow for diversity of culture. It's a small start to change the world but I think it's a great idea.

  11. I think the next step is to find people who have like-minded ideas to pool resources to establish the boarding school. Your idea is great, you just need to find people who are willing to support your project financially.
